Coiling Doors for Commercial Openings
Strong, compact, and secure. Coiling doors fit openings where nothing can run back into the building.
A coiling door rolls up into a compact coil above the opening instead of sliding back along the ceiling. That leaves the ceiling clear for lighting, sprinklers, cranes, and racking, and it suits openings where side room and headroom are tight.
The most common types are coiling service doors for warehouses, shops, and loading docks, coiling grilles for storefronts and security openings that still need airflow and visibility, and smaller counter shutters for service windows. Insulated coiling doors are available for heated or cooled spaces. For the larger steel curtain doors, see rolling steel doors.
We recommend the door type after seeing the opening and how it is used, not before.
How a Coiling Door Works
A curtain, a barrel, two guides, and a way to lift it.
The curtain is made of interlocking slats, or an open grille pattern on security grilles. It runs in steel guides on each side of the opening and rolls onto a spring-loaded barrel mounted above it, usually inside a hood that protects the coil.
The springs inside the barrel counterbalance the curtain, so the door can be raised by a chain hoist, a hand crank, or, on busier openings, a motor operator. A heavy bottom bar with a seal closes against the floor.
Most coiling door problems come from worn barrel springs, bent slats or guides, a damaged bottom bar, or an operator that needs service. See hoist and trolley operator repair.

Our Standards for Coiling Door Work
Every coiling door is measured, specified, and tested the same way.
Measured on site: opening width and height, headroom for the coil and hood, and side room for the guides
Operation matched to use: chain hoist, crank, or motor chosen for how often the door runs
Barrel springs tensioned: set so the curtain is balanced and easy to raise
Guides plumb and secure: mounted so the curtain runs straight without binding
Bottom bar and seal fitted: closing tight to the floor
Single point of contact: your address and phone number are all we need to begin

Site visit, installation, and testing.
- 01
Site Visit and Specification
We measure the opening and the space above and beside it, ask how the door is used and how often, and recommend the door type, curtain, and operation. You get a same-week quote.
- 02
Installation
Guides are mounted plumb, the barrel and hood are installed, the curtain is hung, and the barrel springs are tensioned. Chain hoists, cranks, or operators are installed and set up.
- 03
Testing and Handoff
We run the door through full cycles, check balance and travel, confirm the bottom bar seals, test any operator safety devices, and show your team how to operate the door.

Frequently Asked Questions
They work the same way: a curtain that rolls up into a coil above the opening. Rolling steel door usually refers to the larger steel curtain doors on warehouses and docks. Coiling door is the broader term that also covers coiling grilles and counter shutters.
It depends on the door's height and curtain, which set the size of the coil and hood above the opening. Coiling doors generally need less ceiling space than sectional doors because nothing runs back into the building. We measure on site.
For openings used many times a day, a motor operator saves time and wear. For doors opened occasionally, a chain hoist or crank is simpler and lower cost.
Usually the barrel springs have lost tension or broken, or the curtain is binding in bent guides. Don't force it. Spring tension work on coiling doors should be done by a technician.
Your facility address and a phone number are all we need to begin. We respond in under 15 minutes and schedule a site visit to measure the opening.
